Chapter 17
The screening had gone well over the weekend, giving Brandt and Bean a boost of confidence as they prepared to film their next picture. All of their movies went directly to DVD and were distributed worldwide through various marketers. Then, after a year on DVD, they were released on Netflix and sometimes shown on LGBT television stations around the world. Brandt and Bean were hoping to produce a movie one day that would take the film festivals by storm and be released on the big screen as a feature film.
They had less than a week to go before they needed to be in Vancouver for the final prep of the set and to start shooting the film. Since Bean was the director, she had gone up a couple of days early to make sure everything was on schedule.
It was quiet in the office without Bean talking her ears off, so Brandt decided to change the atmosphere around her. “I’m going to lunch. Send my calls to my voicemail,” she said to Renee before walking out the front door of the building.
Brandt slid into the contoured leather seat of her car and sped down the road a couple of blocks to a popular soup, salad, and sandwich place that Bean always boasted about. She parked in the back lot and walked around to the front door. She froze when she took in the woman walking towards her, seemingly going into the same restaurant.
“I’d say fancy meeting you here, but I’d be lying,” she said.
“I’m sorry I didn’t return your call,” Summer sighed. “Things have been crazy with the show about to start.”
Brandt eyed her up and down. Summer looked as good as ever, dressed in baggy warm-up pants, sneakers, and sports bra with a short-waist style hoodie over it. Her hair was up in a ponytail with curly tendrils hanging down, and she had dark sunglasses covering her pretty, light green eyes.
“Are you going in?” Brandt questioned.
Summer nodded.
“Would you like to join me?”
Summer looked around first, then replied, “Sure.”
They walked inside together and were shown to a booth in the back.
“What happened the last night of the cruise?” Brandt asked.
“I’m sorry. The entertainment crew threw me a goodbye party and the next morning, I was assigned to baggage.”
Brandt couldn’t really say anything negative. She wasn’t looking for a relationship and if whatever it was they shared on the cruise was just that, a few shared moments, then she understood why Summer had avoided her.
“I understand,” Brandt said, pausing to order a glass of water and a salad from the waitress. “You must live nearby. I always seem to run into you in this area,” she continued, changing the subject.
Summer smiled. “The dance studio I rehearse at is a couple blocks away.”
“I see. So, how are things going with the show?”
“Hectic to say the least. The season is ten weeks long, then it’s off for four months. After that, it runs again for another ten-week season. I get comp tickets for friends and family, so I’ll definitely send you some.
